Play By Ear
The morning session, entitled Play By Ear will be led by Richard Smith and is ideal for both classroom Music teachers and peripatetic Music teachers. Richard delivers this workshop to teachers around the country and leads courses for the ABRSM. His approach helps musicians of every instrument learn to not only play melodies by ear, but also to create and voice accompaniments and then teach their pupils how to do the same. Richard has also promised to pass on some tips for teaching scales using popular repertoire the pupils know, and to help with ideas for teaching pupils who have never learned to read music. People are asked to bring their instrument to this workshop. You can find out more about Richard by visiting his website: http://www.thecompletemusician.co.uk/

Open Forum
The day will also include an open forum. People will be asked to submit agenda items in advance and all will be welcome to contribute to the discussion.

GCSE Music resources
The afternoon workshop will focus on teaching resources for GCSE Music. We would like teachers to share resources they have created for GCSE composition and the listening paper. Those who are happy to do this will be asked to let us know which area their resource/teaching idea is for (and what board they use) so that we can ensure we have a session that includes resources for both units.

King’s School, Worcester – Director of Music

for September 2013
King’s Worcester (935 boys and girls, 11-18) is looking for an inspirational and experienced musician to lead its impressive music department from September 2013. Music is taught at GCSE and A level. Extra-curricular music has been a traditional strength, based principally on Classical music but embracing many other genres too. A steady stream of Organ and Choral scholarships to Oxford and Cambridge colleges over the years, as well as a number of places and awards at specialist music colleges, have underlined the strong link between practical and academic musicianship at the school. Regular big musical productions in our 310 seat theatre have been central to the activities of the department.

The close connection of the school with Worcester Cathedral has enriched the musical life of the school in many ways, not least through the involvement of both boys and girls from the school in the cathedral choirs and through our regular use of the building for services and assemblies. College Hall, once a medieval monastic refectory and now our assembly hall, must be one of the finest concert settings for any school in this country. King’s has two Junior Schools (St Alban’s and Hawford). Musical activity is strong in both. A significant proportion of the 80-90 pupils who transfer from our own junior schools to the senior school each year are competent players and singers.

Closing date for applications is Wednesday 23rd January, with interviews on 7th and 8th February. Further details and an application form are available by email from headmaster@ksw.org.uk or from the school website (www.ksw.org.uk).
