David Squibb (updated)28 Apr

You will be saddened to hear of the death of MMA member David Squibb, former MMA committee
member and Director of Music at Trinity School, Croydon.

Only a couple of months ago he attended a reunion of 60 Trinity Old Boys, who returned to their old
school to thank David for his inspirational guidance as both music teacher and Director of Music at
the school. Despite being unwell, David was able to catch up with old friends and listen to some
great musical performances.

I had the privilege of knowing David when I was Director of Music at Caterham School and I benefited
from his good nature and experience in various ways. He gave freely of his time in showing me round
Trinity School’s marvellous music department and offering advice as we went through the process of
planning a new music school at Caterham. It was always a delight to meet David at area meetings
and also at MMA conferences – he was genuinely interested in what other people were doing.
I joined the Committee only after ill health had forced David to step down, but I know that he made a valued
contribution, bringing to bear his experience of enthusing young people in making music of the highest standard.

If Colleagues would like to contact the family, or attend the funeral, please direct correspondence through Carol Hawkins. admin@mma-online.org.uk / 01227 475600

Robert Gupta: Music is medicine29 Mar

If you haven’t discovered TED talks yet, here is a great introduction.
Robert Gupta, violinist with the LA Philharmonic, talks about a violin lesson he once gave to a brilliant, schizophrenic musician – and what he learned. Called back onstage later, Gupta plays his own transcription of the prelude from Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1.

Five Corners Quintet15 Feb

Five Corners Quintet
As recently featured in the last issue of Ensemble, here are a few tracks from the latest release by Helsinki’s Five Corners Quintet. Scroll down for the music.

“In musical terms the goal of the FCQ is to set an example of how dance floor-friendly contemporary production can fruitfully meet the musical craftmanship of the past, creating music that sounds as hip as the classic jazz records but is at the same time structurally polished and easily accessible.”
